President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday dissolved the National Executive Council of the All Progressive Congress after the meeting called by Victor Giadom, former Acting National Chairman of the party. Many APC members did not take Victor Giadom seriously when he told those that cared to know that he was the Acting National Chairman of the party. That was when late Senator Abiola Ajimobi was appointed as the Acting National Chairman which Hilliard Eta acted on his behalf. Those who are in Oshiomhole’s camp called Victor Giadom a joker who didn’t know how the hierarchy in a political party works. But finally Buhari recognized him and attended the NEC meeting he convened. Although the NWC of APC has been dissolved base on Buhari’s recommendation, some APC members think it was illegal. But let’s look at it. APC after Adams Oshiomhmole’s suspended was heading towards self-destruction when it had three National Chairmen emerge in one day.
Such has not been heard before in the history of Nigerian party politics. The ugly event that played last week in APC is not good for a ruling party. It made mockery of internal democracy which APC has always proclaimed.
I have pondered towards the decision Buhari made to dissolve the National Working Committee of the APC. It was not a decision he made in a hurry. That decision was a well thought of Buhari and his advisers even before he attended the NEC meeting. He needed to act fast to save his party otherwise it will affect his program for the country. Just like an adage says ” Someone whose house is on fire doesn’t chase rat”.
But President Buhari has sent a strong message to Tinubu, Oshiomhole and others who are indirectly playing 2023 politics. The message is that him Buhari presently is concerned on how to deliver his campaign promises to Nigeria and doesn’t need any distraction. President Buhari at this present time has a serious issue of insecurity, economy and the coronavirus pandemic facing his administration. That is enough to give him a sleepless night. He is not happy that those who should help him are busy with their 2023 ambitions.
Another message he sent to Tinubu, Oshiomhole and others is that even though we are friends and I allow you people to have your way, I’m still the leader of the party. President Buhari felt that his less interest in internal party politics just to be fair to all has been taken for granted and needed to show that he is the leader of the party.
Buhari didn’t want to intefere with Oshiomhole and Obaseki’s face off because he doesn’t want to be seen as taking sides. And finally he made it clear to them that even though they have interest in 2023 Presidency that him Buhari as a sitting President who will handover to the next President in 2023 have a big role to play as to who flys the flag of APC. The rumored Presidential ambition of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and how his loyalists are struggling to control the APC in order to save guard such ambition has been made clear to even Buhari.
The 2023 Presidency will be interesting in APC. Just like Tinubu is rumored to have Presidential ambition, there are also some few quiet men in APC also in the South whom Buhari trust more. They are quiet for now working with Buhari and trying their best to prove themselves to him and waiting for the appropriate time to show themselves.
