Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commented on the SARS torture against Nigerians.
Atiku Abubakar joined those who called on the government to take appropriate action against the force, saying it was set up to fight serious crimes such as armed robbery and kidnapping.
This follows reports in some of the country’s newspapers, as well as a video showing some suspected SARS officers killing a man and fleeing with his car.
Atiku Abubakar made the announcement on his Twitter account saying; “The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the @PoliceNG was set up to confront violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other related crimes. However, the unit has today morphed into an oppressor of the Nigerian masses who strive every day for a better life. ”
The incident took place on Saturday, October 3 at the entrance of a hotel called Wetland, in the town of Ughelli in Delta State.
The video shows officers allegedly taking the car of the man who turned off the Lexus SUV.
The former vice-president added that complaints of misappropriation and extortion were intensifying.
Atiku condemned the harassment by SARS and called on the government to take action.
According to him; “Reports of intimidation, harassment and outright extortion by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have continued unabated.”
“I strongly condemn their cruel actions against our people, and I urge the government to rise to the occasion and nip this monstrosity in the bud with the seriousness it deserves” Atiku said.
