The incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, who contested the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, scored the highest votes cast in Ondo East Local Government Area.

Ondo East LG was projected to be one of the strongest base of the ZLP because of the possible influence of a former governor of the state, Olusegun Mimiko, who is a leader of the party.

He defeated Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 3, 532 while Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party, scored 3, 051.
